Sony’s animated vampire flick Hotel Transylvania grossed $43 million in ticket sales over the weekend, setting the record for the biggest September opening…

Hotel Transylvania marks the biggest September release since Reese Witherspoon’s decade-old Sweet Home Alabama, which brought in nearly $36 million.

Sony nabbed the No. 2 spot as well, with time-travelling film Looper bringing in $21.2 million.

Pitch Perfect, starring Anna Kendrick, sang to a mighty fine tune of $5.2 million, despite having only been shown at 335 theaters.

But not all films experienced box office bliss.

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Won’t Back Down flopped in its debut, bringing in just $2.7 million.

Overall, box office ticket sales were up 44 percent from last week, and up around 20 percent from last year.
